High School Program

High School (9th – 12th Grade)

In our programming for high school students, we seek to offer a broad range of activities to meet the changing needs and interests of our youth as they approach young adulthood.

Religious Education Class

During the 11 am Sunday worship service, the High School youth meet in the Annex, the youth house just north of the church. The high school class engages teens in critically examining the purposes and principles of Unitarian Universalism in relationship to their own experiences and interests. In this class, youth can explore a wide range of spiritual and moral questions and learn to be comfortable with a variety of answers, including uncertain or ambiguous answers.

For more detailed descriptions of the curriculum materials currently in use at each grade level, please see our Religious Education Prospectus.

YRUU – High School Youth Group

YRUU, or Young Religious Unitarian Universalists, meets in the youth house just north of the church from 6:30-8:30 on Sunday evenings. The group has lively conversations about the world, their UU faith, and their lives. The topics of the meetings are decided by the youth and facilitated by adult advisors. They engage in service projects to build an understanding of themselves as compassionate agents of change. And, sometimes, they just hang out and enjoy each others’ company! There is something different every week.

Cons

Youth who participate in YRUU have the opportunity to attend district “Cons” (UU youth conferences) several times a year. These weekend long events provide youth with opportunities to connect with UU teens from all over the Mountain Desert District. These weekends are filled with youth and advisor lead workshops, worship, and social activities designed to promote spiritual and emotional growth and develop leadership skills. The UU “Con” culture provides a safe space in which high school youth can explore and express their unique identity and define their relationship to the world in which they live.

Mission Trip

YRUU participants also plan an annual Mission Trip which takes place during the summer at the end of the church year. This trip is a profound service-learning opportunity through which the youth learn to work with their hands and their hearts as they put their faith into action. The 2010 Mission Trip is scheduled for mid-June and will involve working on an Organic Farm in conjunction with the current UUA Study/Action Issue of “Ethical Eating.” YRUU participants are expected to engage in a variety of fundraising activities throughout the church year to support the Mission trip.
