You’ve come to the right place!
Our website aims to reflect the friendliness of our congregation, and we hope the ease with which you use it carries over to your visits to our church. We impose no creed on our members but invite you to explore and grow with us in your own unique way. Our printable Visitors Guide offers many details about our vibrant congregation.
Our congregation is made of people with many beliefs and religious backgrounds. We are liberal Christians, atheists, pagans, agnostics, humanists, searchers, and believers in higher powers of many kinds, which we call by many names. We treasure the diverse colors, ethnicities, sexual orientations, family configurations, enablements, and socioeconomic status of our church family. Our differences are as valuable as our commonalities. UU congregations share a Judeo-Christian foundation but each one is self-governing.
As bespeaks our New England-style sanctuary, Sundays at First Church are fairly traditional, with singing, sermons, ceremonies, and yes, announcements. So you’ll no doubt feel comfortable even on your first visit. On the other hand, there are times when we celebrate music, wisdom, and rituals from other times and places. Be assured that we welcome you each and every time.
One of our greatest assets is our Religious Education program, which gives children and youth a solid foundation in the Seven Principles that guide our spiritual lives (see below). Look for more information about curriculum and activities here.
We’re also proud of the place First Church holds in this most unique of American cities. Unitarianism in Salt Lake is 117 years old. It was at First Church that some of Salt Lake’s liberal organizations, such as Planned Parenthood and NOW, were founded. Today’s members continue to use First Church as a base of operations to work on such issues as immigration, hunger, and environment. Go here to see where you can put your time and talent to work.
To ensure that we as individuals and as a congregation are the best that we can be, we pay close attention to social and spiritual needs. To that end, we learn, we create, we labor, we serve our fellows, and we have fun. Check out the activities and events section here to see what sparks your interest. When you do come to church, stay for coffee hour and look for more information at the Welcome, Book, and RE tables in the social hall. Introduce yourself, sign the guest book, request a name tag, and be sure to come back again and again.
