Religious Education Registration For Children and Youth

Social Justice Sunday

The mission of the Religious Education (RE) Program at First Church is to give our children and youth opportunities to:

  • Engage creatively
  • Cultivate community
  • Foster a strong commitment to social action
  • Become independent thinkers
  • Encourage curiosity, compassion and personal spiritual exploration

How do we fulfill our mission?

For the 2019-2020 church year, our theme for RE is Connectedness. Throughout the year we will be exploring our Unitarian Universalist faith with the idea that we are all connected, to one another in faith throughout the world and in our community through social justice.

One of the primary goals of RE is introducing Unitarian Universalist principles and practices that enable children and youth to embrace our Seven Principles.

Our Seven Principles teach us to affirm and promote:

  • The inherent worth and dignity of every person
  • Justice, equality, and compassion in human relations
  • Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations
  • A free and responsible search for truth and meaning
  • The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large
  • The goal of the world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all
  • Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part

We do this by:

  • Ensuring a safe learning environment
  • Providing guidance for activities and rituals
  • Integrating children and youth into our church community
  • Imparting knowledge of Unitarian Universalist history and luminaries so that our youth can embrace their own UU  identity

Philosophy & Goals

At its core our RE program: (1) explores topics that illuminate the history and meaning of Unitarian Universalism, (2) focuses on issues of social justice and on a higher plane, (3) considers the interdependent web of nature.
